What is baptism and why do I need to be baptized?
The word “baptism” means “immersion”.
Hebrews 6:1&2 says, “Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.”
There are four kinds of baptism in the New Testament:
1. Baptism of Repentance - Baptism of John
2. Baptism into Christ
3. Baptism in Water
4. Baptism in the Holy Spirit
Water baptism is an outward sign of an inward working. The immersion into water displays our immersion into Christ.
It’s your opportunity to publicly identify with the redemption Jesus purchased for you.
Requirements to be Water Baptized
To be a candidate for water baptism, you must believe and confess Jesus.
Acts 8:36-38 says, “Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, ‘See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?’ Then Philip said, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you may.’ And he answered and said, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’ So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.”
Children must be old enough to believe and confess their faith before being water baptized.
